Singapore's educational system is consistently near the top of international rankings. With a staggering 97% of students continuing their education beyond the age of 18, it is not surprising that the country is seen as an educational powerhouse.

The success of Singapore's education system can be traced back to its structured and centralised approach, which includes a national curriculum and uniform teaching practices. Today, educational institutions such as Invictus Malaysia are adopting many aspects of 0this system, in order to provide quality education to international students.

In this article, we delve into a few aspects of the Singapore education system, providing a through analysis of its ongoing success, and how we implement it into our curriculum at Invictus Malaysia.

What is the Singapore Education System?

The Singapore Education System is a structure that caters to students across various stages of learning. This system consists of four main parts: The Early Years, Primary School, Secondary School, and Tertiary Education.

Early Years: Pre-school education for children from 4 to 6 years old helps develop cognitive, creative, and social skills.

Primary School: In Singapore, primary education is compulsory, just like in Malaysia. It involves a six-year programme catering to students between the ages of 7 and 12. it's compulsory to take a Mother tongue language, to help cultivate a bilingual population. At the end of their primary school education, they will take their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), which is the Singaporean equivalent of the PSAT.

Secondary School: Following primary school, students progress to secondary education. which is divided into two main tracks - Express and Normal (Academic or Technical). The track is based on a student's PSLE results and the school they're applying to. Secondary education lasts for 4 to 5 years, depending on the track. It includes a mix of core and elective subjects and culminates in the GCE 'O' Level or 'N' Level examination. However, this is planned to be changed in 2024, with a different banding system implemented.

Tertiary Education: After finishing Secondary School, students can choose to attend a Junior College, Polytechnic, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), or other institutions. Each tertiary school offers a range of programmes and various qualifications, such as GCE 'A' Levels, diplomas, or technical certificates.

The Singapore Education System has a clear structure that caters to students' diverse need at different educational stages. With a strong focus on high standards and efficiency, this system has consistently produced excellent results on o global scale.

Is the Education System in Singapore Good?

Education in Singapore has repeatedly garnered international attention for its accomplishments. According to the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), students from primary and secondary schools in Singapore have regularly secured the top positions in mathematics and science. In the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), measured every three years, Singapore is also consistently in the top three in categories such as reading, mathematics, and science. The Singapore Math approach is often global success, and is widely regarded as one of the reasons for the exceptional performance of students.

The Singapore education system has several principles that helps it succeed:

1.    "Teach Less, Learn More" Strategy: One of contributing factors to the success of Singapore education is a teaching strategy which focuses on learning fewer topics of greater depth. This approach helps students develop a strong foundation in their studies, streamlines the syllabus, and promotes understanding.

2.    CPA Approach: Another unique feature of the Singapore education system is its emphasis on the "concrete-pictorial-abstract" (CPA) approach. This teaching method utilises concrete objects, visual representations, and abstract symbols to help students grasp mathematical concepts. By employing these techniques, teachers can systematically teach new concepts and ideas.

3.    Well-Trained Teachers: In addition to these teaching methodologies, the Singapore education system places considerable focus on the professional development of educators. Teacher must undergo rigorous training, ensuring they possess the necessary knowledge and skills to facilitate effective learning. The Ministry of Education (MOE) provides teacher with continuous support and opportunities for growth throughout their careers. 72% of Singaporean teachers report that their professions feel sufficiently appreciated and supported in society.

At Invictus Malaysia, we use the Singapore Math approach. Our Cambridge Primary and Cambridge IGCSE secondary school syllabus is taught by teachers who have been trained by the Singapore Ministry of Education. Additionally, we make sure that our students experience the same high-quality education as those in Singapore, combining the 'Teach Less, Learn More' approach with the 'concrete-pictorial-abstract' method. Our teachers are also supported wholeheartedly by us, and they work diligently to help students excel in their studies and develop a true understanding of the subjects they learn.
